Affordable Housing:
What is Affordable Housing?
KDSB offers an alternative option for individuals that meet specific eligibility criteria for housing. Affordable Housing is not considered Rent-Geared-to-Income but is below Average Market Rent. Affordable Housing programs are spread across the District and can help people find and maintain stable and appropriate housing.
Supportive Housing:
What is Supportive Housing?
Supportive housing links affordable housing to service providers that support a comprehensive and coordinated and culturally appropriate package of services and programs to help individuals maintain their housing.
- Sioux Lookout
Once an individual has decided to apply for Supportive Housing they are referred to Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre or First Step Women’s Shelter who completes the application.
The individual completes a pre-screening questionnaire with a worker then they would complete the application.
The paperwork is then held by the KDSB and the individual is placed on a wait list. As units are available the selection committee reviews all applications and selects the tenant to be offered a unit at the complex.
- Red Lake
Red Lake Supportive Housing programs are open to anyone aged 19 or over who experiences chronic homelessness or is at-risk of becoming homeless.
The intake process focuses on proven indicators of risk and need.

The Urban Indigenous Homeward Bound program administers a four-year wrap-around program that provides services for Indigenous single mothers. Program steps include a pre-course, a college diploma course, a one-year one year on the job training and assistance to find adequate employment.
