KDSB Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI)

Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI) housing is housing in which the rent you pay is determined by your income.

Defined in the Housing Services Act 2011, RGI is based on 30 percent of the total household income.

There are additions or subtractions from the rent depending on the building unit or tenant need. The basic additions or subtractions are:

  • Utilities
  • Parking
  • Laundry

Utilities are either added or subtracted from the RGI rent depending on who pays the utilities. Households receiving assistance from Ontario Works, or Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) pay rent on a beneficiary scale from the Province of Ontario.

The amount of rent you pay is reviewed annually. You will be requested to provide proof of all sources of income. Failure to provide income information on a timely basis may result in:

  • The loss of your rental subsidy, and
  • Your rent will increase to the current market rent for the unit you occupy.

Note: RGI rents cannot exceed the Market Rent determined for RGI buildings.

Only when KDSB units have demonstrated a long-term vacancy (2 months); and KDSB has exhausted their wait list for the particular community would KDSB be able to offer a unit to market tenants.

Non-Profit Providers offer both market rent and Rent-Geared-to-Income.

Market rent units are available through Non-Profit providers.
